Link blocks to objectives

Choose whether a content or practice block uses its page's objectives, its own, or none.

A page often teaches more than one objective, and one block on it may be the place learners actually practice a skill. Linking blocks to objectives lets coverage show that detail, instead of counting every block on the page the same way.

By default, a block on a content page uses its page’s objectives. What it counts as depends on the block type:

  • Teaching: text, callouts, quotes, accordions, tabs, images, video, audio, and downloads.
  • Practice: checklists, copy-prompt blocks, and embeds.

Questions in a scored quiz count as assessment, and questions in a practice-mode quiz count as practice. Decorative content doesn’t count toward objectives, and blocks on quiz and cover pages don’t take their page’s objectives; link them directly if you want them to count.

  1. Select a block on the canvas and open the inspector.
  2. Find the Learning objectives group. It appears when the course has objectives and the block type can be linked.
  3. Choose one of the link modes:
    • Same as page uses the page’s objectives. The note under the control lists them, for example “Uses this page’s objectives: 1, 2. Counts as teaching for these objectives.”
    • Choose shows a checkbox for each objective so you can pick this block’s own list.
    • Off makes the block count toward no objective.

Choose Open Alignment to see the result in the Learning Design workspace. Locked blocks can’t be changed.

In the Alignment matrix, show a page’s blocks with the + control. Block rows are labeled Instruction or Practice. A block or question with its own links shows Reset to page; choose it to use the page’s objectives again. Rows set to Off show links off.

When an objective is taught and practiced but has no scored question, its status is Practiced, not assessed. When it is practiced but not taught or assessed, it is Practiced only. In Goals & objectives, the objective lists blocks you linked directly under Taught on, and practice blocks and practice-mode questions under Practiced in.

Deleting an objective removes it from every block and question that was linked to it. Undo restores the objective and its links.

Use block links when a block really is where learners meet or practice the objective. Linking every block on a page adds little; the page link already counts those blocks.
